Palisades Washington, DC
A newly built home provided a blank canvas for this design. The patio was rebuilt to provide a more ample entertaining space, and a row of Hornbeam trees was planted to screen eventual neighbors. The trees were framed with a mass planting of red twig dogwood to add color in the winter
A swale was dug beneath the retaining wall and planted with water absorbing native shrubs, iris, and sweet flag to take up storm water coming from the neighboring properties above the wall. Accent plantings include irises, Japanese maples, heuchera, and witch hazels for winter color. To help with drainage and ease of maintenance, the property sides were covered in gravel with steppers with pockets of native planting to add interest.
