A small, pie shaped backyard was turned into five separate rooms on different levels for a client who loved her garden and loved to host large parties in it.

Mindful of the views outside the new kitchen addition, a custom brick fountain was built to anchor the center patio and provide a focal view from all vantage points. A lead bowl was commissioned to provide a continuous sheet of water and the surrounding wall provides additional seating.

A hedge of hornbeams was planted in front of the fence to provide privacy off the deck. The area underneath the new addition was turned into a loggia to take advantage of the space – and the shade. On the side, a new retaining wall was built with brick capped with flagstone. An arbor and fence frames the view, delineates the space and blocks the view of the next-door neighbors’ house. Every inch of this back yard was designed to be experienced.
