Wesley Heights, DC
The design goal with this renovation was to create a more welcoming but elegant approach to this gracious home, while establishing more privacy from the busy street below. Another key goal was to capture more lawn and entertaining space for the family in a back yard that was deeply sloped.
A custom fence was added to provide some screening with a graceful reveal of the home. A new walk was built with a seating area featuring an antique bench as the focal point framed by plantings between the trees. The plantings themselves are refined in their simplicity: boxwoods, hollies, cherry laurels frame the foundation for evergreen structure and a cherry tree, camellias, rhododendrums and hellebores provide seasonal color.
In the back, a retaining wall was built to create an expanded patio for entertaining, and a boulder wall was added to the side to create a level and extended lawn. Boulder steppers were added to connect the new patio to the side garden, resulting in expanded but distinct areas for entertaining that are all linked for easy circulation.
